THOMAS SORLIE 

Writing Lab Supervisor

Thomas Sorlie brings a strong background in writing instruction and Islamic studies to his role as Writing Lab Supervisor at Guidance College. He has taught academic writing at both the University of Georgia and Gwinnett Technical College, where he worked closely with diverse student populations, including ESL learners and nontraditional students. His approach emphasizes writing as a process of discovery and refinement, tailored to the needs of each learner.

In addition to his academic training, Mr. Sorlie studied Islam traditionally under Imam Muhammad Islam at Masjid Darus Salam in Lawrenceville, Georgia. He later completed a Master’s Degree in Islamic Studies at the University of Georgia, further deepening his engagement with both classical and modern scholarship.

Mr. Sorlie has also delivered public lectures on Islamic history and theology at institutions such as Emory University and the U.S. Department of Defense, and has appeared in media outlets including al-Hurra Television and Voice of America. He is a published writer, with op-ed contributions appearing in Today’s Zaman, a former English-language daily based in Istanbul. His professional experience reflects a commitment to thoughtful communication, student development, and cross-cultural education.
